According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there were 5,583 registered suicides in the UK in 2022, which equates to a rate of 10.4 deaths per 100,000 population. This figure signifies a concerning increase from previous years, emphasising the importance of continued advocacy and support. Here are some critical statistics to consider:


  • Demographics: Men are disproportionately affected, representing about 75% of all suicide deaths. The highest rates occur among men aged 45-49.

  • Young People: Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among young individuals aged 10-24, with rising rates of self-harm and suicidal thoughts in this group.

  • Geographic Disparities: There are notable regional variations in suicide rates, underscoring the need for tailored support in different communities.


The Power of Mindfulness in Prevention
Suicide is a multifaceted issue influenced by various factors, including mental health conditions, social circumstances, and economic challenges. Practising mindfulness can play a pivotal role in addressing these issues by fostering self-awareness and promoting emotional well being. By encouraging individuals to connect with their thoughts and feelings, mindfulness can help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and inspire those in need to seek help.

How You Can Contribute

  1. Educate Yourself: Understanding the signs of mental health struggles is essential. Key indicators include withdrawal from social activities, changes in behaviour, and expressions of hopelessness.


  2. Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness practices, such as meditation, deep breathing, or journalling. These practices can help you cultivate awareness and manage stress, enabling you to support yourself and others better.


  3. Reach Out: If you notice someone struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out and ask how they are doing. A compassionate conversation can create a safe space for someone to share their feelings.


  4. Share Mental Health Resources: Promote access to mental health resources like the Samaritans, who provide confidential support 24/7, and Mind, which offers comprehensive advice and assistance for those facing mental health challenges.


  5. Participate in Events: Join local initiatives or events throughout September to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention. Engaging in these activities can contribute to a collective effort in promoting mental health awareness.

  • Mind: Text 86463 for mental health support or visit their website for various resources.
